Privacy Policy — Read My Word
Last updated: 23 August 2026
This privacy policy applies to the Read My Word mobile application (package name com.word.my.read) for Android (the "App").
Summary
Read My Word is designed to work offline and without accounts. We do not ask you to register, we do not collect your name or email, and the words you save stay on your device.
The App does show ads and collect anonymous usage statistics, which is explained in full below.
1. Information the App does NOT collect
- We do not require an account, login, or registration
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or postal address
- We do not upload the photos or camera frames you scan
- We do not upload your saved vocabulary list
2. Camera
The App requires camera access to recognise printed text.
Camera frames are processed entirely on your device using Google ML Kit's on-device text recognition. Images are analysed in memory to detect words and are not saved to your device's storage and not transmitted to us or any third party.
3. Your saved words
Words you save are stored in a local database on your device. They are never sent to us, because we do not operate any servers.
The App does allow Android's built-in Auto Backup to include this database, so your vocabulary list survives moving to a new phone. That backup goes to your own Google Drive account, is governed by Google's Privacy Policy, and is not accessible to us. You can turn it off in Settings → Google → Backup on your device.
Uninstalling the App deletes the database from your device. If Auto Backup is enabled, a copy may remain in your Google Drive backup until it expires or you delete it.
4. Translation
The App offers two translation methods:
- Offline translation — powered by Google ML Kit. Once a language pack is downloaded, translation happens entirely on your device. Downloading a language pack requires an internet connection.
- Google Translate — if you tap the Google Translate button, the selected word is sent to Google Translate to be translated. This is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
5. Text-to-speech
Pronunciation uses the text-to-speech engine installed on your device. The behaviour and data handling of that engine is governed by its own provider (typically Google).
6. Advertising
The App displays ads served by Google AdMob.
AdMob may collect and process:
- Your advertising ID (a resettable identifier — the App declares the
com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_IDpermission) - Approximate location derived from your IP address
- Device information and ad interaction data
This is used to serve and measure ads. See How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in Settings → Google → Ads on your Android device.
Consent (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the App shows a consent form (via Google's User Messaging Platform) before ads are initialised. You may choose whether to allow personalised advertising, and you can change your choice later through the privacy options in the App.
7. Analytics and crash reporting
The App uses Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand how the App is used and to diagnose crashes.
This collects anonymous, aggregated information such as:
- Which features are used (for example: a scan was started, a word was saved)
- Number of words detected in a scan
- Selected target language
- Country / region and device model
- Crash reports and diagnostic logs
This data is not linked to your identity and is not used to identify you personally. See Google's Privacy Policy.
8. Children
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Your rights
Because we do not collect personally identifiable information and operate no servers, there is no account data for us to export or delete. You can:
- Delete all your saved words by uninstalling the App (and, if you use Auto Backup, by deleting the backup in your Google account)
- Reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings
- Change your advertising consent choice in the App (where applicable)
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
